Learn How to Be Positive with These 8 Simple Steps

How to be positive with 8 simple steps

Growing up, I wasn’t exactly a beacon of positivity. In fact, I earned the unofficial title of “Champion Whiner” in my family. Complaining and whining came naturally to me as a kid.

It wasn’t until high school that I started to think more positively. A series of life events forced me to grow up quickly, and I realized that focusing on the negative was draining and unproductive. I started to notice how other people handled challenges—some with grace and optimism—and I wanted that for myself. The easiest way I learned was through books, and then slowly I started to get into meditation, mindfulness, and even astrology. It’s taken consistent effort and work for me to continue to cultivate my positive mindset. Each day, I strive to become a better version of myself, and positivity plays a huge role in that.

In this post, I’ll share some things that helped me shift my mindset and be more positive everyday. Follow these 8 steps to start cultivating your own positive outlook on life. (I’m not talking about toxic positivity—we’re not pretending life is perfect.) It’s about small, intentional steps to make each day a little brighter.

A Small Guide to Being More Positive in Daily Life

Use these 8 simple steps to start cultivating more positivity into your life.

1. Start with Gratitude

Every day, take a moment to reflect on what you’re grateful for. It can be as simple as a good cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, or even just waking up. Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s abundant in your life.

Practice Mindful Breathing

2. Practice Mindful Breathing

When you feel overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths. Inhale for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for four. This simple act grounds you in the present moment and reduces stress, allowing you to approach situations with a clearer mind.

3. Set Small, Achievable Goals

Instead of focusing on everything you want to accomplish, pick one or two small tasks to complete each day. Success, even in small measures, creates momentum and builds positivity.

Reframe Negative Thoughts

4. Reframe Negative Thoughts

When a negative thought arises, pause and ask yourself: Is this thought helping me? Challenge it by finding a more balanced perspective. For example, instead of “I’ll never get this done,” try “This is challenging, but I’m making progress.”

5. Surround Yourself with Positivity

Who and what you surround yourself with matters. Spend time with people who uplift you, read inspiring books, and engage with media and content that motivates rather than drains you. Example: I no longer go on Instagram because it leaves me feeling drained.

Embrace the Power of Affirmations

6. Embrace the Power of Affirmations

Positive affirmations can be a powerful tool. Start your day by saying something encouraging to yourself, like “I am capable,” “I choose to see the good in today,” or “I am growing every day.” My go to affirmation for when I’m having a tough day is “Don’t let the hard days win.” Even had it tattooed on my arm to remember it:)

7. Limit Complaints

Notice how often you complain and challenge yourself to reduce it. Instead of venting, try focusing on solutions or simply acknowledging your feelings without dwelling on them.

Reflect and Celebrate Small Wins

8. Reflect and Celebrate Small Wins

At the end of the day, reflect on what went well. Did you handle a tough situation calmly? Did you complete a task? Celebrating small victories keeps positivity flowing.

Remember, Positivity Is a Practice

Learning to be positive isn’t about being happy all the time. It’s about choosing to focus on the good, even when life gets messy. My journey taught me that positivity isn’t innate; it’s a skill, one you can build with patience and practice. Start small, be kind to yourself, and remember that every step forward counts.

Sending you all the Good Vibes💜✨🌙
