Full Moon in Cancer
Cancer Energy - Family Things
Our last Full Moon was in Gemini and explored communication, adaptability, and duality. With the Full Moon in Cancer happening on January 13, 2025 will bring another type of energy to the table. Cancer is the sign that represents home, our roots, and our family. It speaks to our need for emotional or physical security. This sign also initiates the emotional processes that our the source of our behaviors. These behaviors are our unconscious reactions to others and the drive (motivation) that push us forward or stop us from going out into the world. These energies represent the patterns that have been passed onto us by family, our culture, religion or nationality.
Why I’m Writing About the Full Moon
Over the past year, I’ve been exploring new ways to grow personally, and I’ve discovered a deep connection with astrology and the moon phases. Writing about these topics helps me stay focused and committed to learning while also giving me the opportunity to share what resonates. I’m not an astrologer, nor do I claim to be an expert, but I’m passionate about diving into the meanings behind the stars and planets and how they influence our lives. To ensure accuracy, I rely on trusted resources—books and websites written by reputable experts in the field. Linking to these sources allows me to share their knowledge while continuing my own journey of discovery.
The Energy of Cancer: A Dive into the Waters of Home
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, making this lunation even more potent. This sign speaks to our instinctual need for connection and care, asking us to reflect on what makes us feel truly secure. Are we fostering environments—both emotional and physical—that allow us to thrive? This Full Moon invites us to assess our work-life balance and to consider whether we’re prioritizing our inner worlds as much as our external responsibilities.
Ask yourself:
- What feels like home to me?
- Am I creating enough time for the people and places that ground me?
- How can I balance my obligations with my emotional needs?
Tension Between Inner and Outer Worlds
The Full Moon also brings light to areas of tension. Opposite Cancer sits Capricorn, the sign of ambition and responsibility. This dynamic can pull us between professional goals and familial obligations, reminding us of the importance of harmony. While Capricorn’s energy pushes us to climb the mountain of success, Cancer encourages us to remember why we’re climbing in the first place: to create a stable and loving foundation.
Take this time to:
- Reflect on work-life balance.
- Reconnect with family (or chosen family)
- Reassess boundaries to protect emotional well-being. If you need a little extra help with this check out Dr. Dan Wendler’s “How to Set Boundaries” Guide – and why they are different from ultimatums.
"Our traditions and ancestral connections, like the waters of Cancer, should be the living embodiment of the love, gifts, and nourishment that we've been given through generations; not fossilized structures that keep us so rigid that there is no flow in our lives."

Affirmation for the Full Moon Cycle
Choose a keyword and write a personal affirmation for what you want to release from your life, what you want to let go of or what you want to forgive yourself for, based on the archetypal energy.
Example: “I am grateful for the comforts of my home. I release my hard-shelled exterior”
Journal Prompts and Soul Questions for Full Moon in Cancer.
- Celebration and gratitude: Select one of the keywords and celebrate that feeling or trait in your life. Gratitude is a powerful emotion, helping us maintain our state of physical and emotional wellbeing. You can use the idea of celebration and gratitude as a journaling prompt: consider how the keyword you choose is present in your life, and how you want it to manifest more. Then think about how you can celebrate this keyword more. By being mindful and aware of the blessings we have, and celebrating those amazing things will, in time, open your mind and to even more things to be grateful about.
Like calls to like 🙂 – Which makes perfect sense to me now… If you have ever heard that phrase before drop in the comments where you first heard it! – I first read it in “A Court of Thorns and Roses” – By Sarah J Maas
- Conditioning:What are some of the principles and judgements that you grew up with? Ask yourself: do they still hold true for you and how are you choosing to live your life now? If not, then are they ultimate truths or just your family’s values? Make a list of five of your family ‘truths’ and make an intention to review them during the month.
- Tradition: What does tradition and family mean to you? How are you relating to the environment you were brought up in, and what elements helped you create emotional stability and a solid foundation on which to stand strong and face the world?
"Cancer is about conditioning: the way family, religion, culture and country can mold our thoughts and responses."

I am a big believer of keeping books and bookstores alive, but I married a Jewish man who doesn’t like to pay full price for things. lol So I have provided two options if you wanted to grab your own copy from a local store. Every purchase through Bookshop financially supports your local and independent bookstores near you! Or if you get all your books through Amazon (you don’t need to explain your reasons) I have also linked it through Amazon.
I make sure that I support local bookstores the best I can by purchasing some of my books through them when I can, but Amazon is a great resource too. So you know, it’s called balance…just like everything in life. 🙂
