10 Change-of-Season (Fall) Self-Care Tips

I don’t know what it is about summer, but I’m usually the person that becomes a free spirit and goes where the wind takes her. However, now that I’m a Mom, I have to make sure my tiny human keeps to his routine. (Otherwise we are all paying for it…if you know, you know) Usually, when the seasons start to change, and fall rolls around I’m pretty motivated to get shit done. Plus, I spend some extra time on my self-care to get myself ready for the winter hibernation. 🤣 I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, and since it normally kicks in hard when January rolls around I need to stay on top of it the last few months of the year. This means EXTRA self-care.

I also am that person who loves all things fall! Growing up in the country and Minnesota meant we had a good fall season. We had everything you could hope for: crisp fresh air, pumpkin patches galore, fresh apple trees and orchards down the road, fun festivals, real hay bales to decorate, real corn stocks from the backyard, haunted hay rides, corn mazes, full ranches dedicated to haunted houses, and so much more.

Since we live in Southern CA now I don’t get to experience all the same things, but I still love the season. So much so that I started making digital art that gives fall and spooky season vibes. This was one of my change-of-season self-care ideas that I started because I enjoy creating things, and it makes me happy to share my photos and artwork with others. Check them all out HERE.

Side note: Since my seasonal affective disorder doesn’t start until about January, I usually have the holidays and things to look forward to when the seasons change from summer to fall and even fall to winter, but then once we hit that new year it’s in full effect. The weather and not seeing the sun for most of the day has a huge impact on my mood, motivation, and overall energy. If you think you might suffer from seasonal affective disorder too, it doesn’t hurt to chat with a professional about it. 10 Self-Care Tips for fall to help you embrace and enjoy a new season.

  1. Visit a pumpkin patch- This one gets you out of the house, and moving. I would say exercise, but not everyone likes to hit the gym. An easy solution is getting your body moving at a pumpkin patch. Walk around, pick out a pumpkin, and enjoy the fall day and activity.
  2. Light fall-scented candles or use aromatherapy – Fall-scented candles are my favorite! Scents can increase positive emotions, reduce stress, and make your space feel cozy.
  3. Go apple picking – Another form of moving your body. Enjoy another fall activity by finding an apple orchard to go apple picking at. Use the time to walk the rows of trees, enjoy the outside weather, and move your body.
  4. Decorate your space – One of my favorite things to do each holiday is decorate. It keeps me in the moment and enjoying the season that I’m in. This brings me to number 5 on our self-care list.
  5. Enjoy the season you are in: It’s easy to look ahead to getting ready for Christmas, but what I like to do to keep myself in the moment is decorate for the holiday. Once September hits I start to decorate for fall with some halloween decorations included. After Halloween it’s Thanksgiving, and then after Thanksgiving it’s Christmas and Hanukkah decorations. (We’re a mixed household) I know people love to decorate for Christmas right away, but sometimes it’s better to wait, and enjoy being in the present moment of fall.
  6. Enjoy fall colors – Fall colors are beautiful in the midwest, and all over the country. If you are in a place to enjoy the fall colors then do it. Get outside, go for a walk, or go for a drive to enjoy the change of seasons.
  7. Declutter your space or home –  Clean out the house or your space. Get rid of things that you don’t need, and just have less. (This is something I’m actively working on to not collect so much ‘stuff.’)
  8. Read a book – If you don’t like to read you can skip this idea, but maybe if you think you could get on board with reading then below are a few titles to get you started. (Personal development books as well as some fun fall fantasy books)
  9. Enjoy Fall flavors: embrace the PSL trend, drink hot chocolate or spiced apple cider. Enjoy the fall flavors can help elevate your mood, and enjoy the moment that you are in. That’s why they are ‘seasonal’ flavors lol
  10. Gratitude Journal – It can give us good vibes to write down all the things that we are grateful for. Get a cute notebook or something that you’re excited about, and take 3 minutes a day to write all the things that you are grateful for at that moment in time. Just write them down, and if you ever need some extra positivity in your day – go read what you wrote. Or you can try one of my favorite self-development books to use as your gratitude journal: 3-Minute Positivity Workbook by Susan Reynolds.
